University of Virginia, Semester at Sea agree to end school's academic sponsorship of program

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The University of Virginia plans to end its academic sponsorship of the Semester at Sea program by 2016.

The university has been the shipboard study abroad program's academic sponsor since 2006.

Semester at Sea spokeswoman Lauren Judge tells The Daily Progress (http://bit.ly/1lpIMZR) that the program and the university mutually agreed to end the sponsorship.

The university says it appreciates the benefits that its students and faculty have gained through the sponsorship.

U.Va. provides an academic dean and registrar for Semester at Sea's three annual voyages.

In 2012, a U.Va. student died after being hit by a dive boat's propeller during a visit to the island of Dominica. U.Va. has said the recreational boating trip was organized independently of Semester at Sea.
