BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi troops are going house-to-house in Baghdad searching for militants and weapons in neighborhoods close to government installations. It comes as Sunni militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant move toward the capital after capturing large areas of territory in the north. The militants are also threatening several other cities with revered religious shrines.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani intelligence officials say airstrikes overnight in the northwestern tribal regions bordering Afghanistan have killed as many as 100 militants. Two officials say the airstrikes by Pakistan's military targeted eight militant hideouts in the North Waziristan tribal area. The airstrikes come a week after militants carried out a deadly attack at Karachi's main airport.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The White House says the second round of presidential voting in Afghanistan marks a major step forward the country's "democratic path." Election officials estimate the turnout in Saturday's runoff was about 60 percent. Preliminary results are expected on July 2. Officials say although dozens of people were killed nationwide, the voting was largely peaceful.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — More than 400 commuter rail workers in Philadelphia will be heading back to work at midnight after President Barack Obama ordered the creation of a presidential emergency board to mediate the dispute between the Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority and its engineers and electricians unions. The workers went on strike nearly 24 hours ago.
SEATTLE (AP) — The president of Seattle Pacific University says a scholarship is being named for the student who ended a deadly shooting rampage on campus earlier this month. The engineering scholarship will be given in honor of Jon Meis, who pepper-sprayed and tackled the gunman before he could hurt more people. One person was killed and two others were injured in the tragedy.
