Bush is moving into position in the Persian Gulf to give President Barack Obama added flexibility if military action is required to protect American lives and interests in Iraq. The supercarrier is accompanied by a cruiser and a destroyer. The jets and cruise missiles aboard the ships could easily reach Iraq, where an Islamic insurgency is gaining territory.
NOVOHANNIVKA, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's president is vowing to punish the pro-Russia separatists responsible for shooting down a military transport plane on Saturday, killing all 49 crew and troops aboard. The incident is drawing condemnation and concern from western leaders. Analysts say it could lead to a renewed emphasis on increasing sanctions against Russia.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Southern California say a 69-year-old man who was trying to prevent his daughter from driving drunk was run over and killed by the woman in her driveway. Riverside police say the woman ignored her father's pleas and backed her car out of the garage, striking him. Witnesses say she stopped the car after realizing what happened and started to cry.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — President Barack Obama says denying climate change is like arguing the moon is made of cheese. In a speech to graduates of the University of California, Irvine today, Obama issued a call to action on global warming. According to the president, Congress "is full of folks who stubbornly and automatically reject the scientific evidence" and say it's a hoax or fad.
PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Martin Kaymer (KY'-mur) is holding a five-stroke lead heading to the final round of the U.S. Open tomorrow. He shot a 2-over 72 today but it wasn't easy. Kaymer had five bogeys in the third round. The 29-year-old German is at 8-under 202 for the tournament and five shots ahead of Ricky Fowler and Eric Compton.
