PARIS (AP) — A senior U.S. official says newly released Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl (boh BURG'-dahl) is giving telling military officials an account of mistreatment at the hands of his Taliban captors in Afghanistan. The officials says Bergdahl has told military authorities he was tortured, beaten and held in a cage after he tried to escape. The official says the accounts are difficult to verify.
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — The six-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike that left actor and comedian Tracy Morgan in critical condition and killed one of his friends remains under investigation. The driver of the truck that rammed into Morgan's chauffeured limo-bus faces multiple charges. A Morgan spokesman says the entertainer is getting "excellent care."
BAGHDAD (AP) — A double bombing in a town northeast of Baghdad has killed 19 people. Officials say a Kurdish party office in the ethnically mixed Diyala province was targeted by a suicide bomber, followed by a car bomb explosion as security forces arrived. Another 65 people were wounded.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Officials say 81 bodies have been recovered in a remote, mountainous region of northern Afghanistan hit by flash flooding two days ago. Police and villagers are combing the rugged terrain to look for missing people as Army helicopters fly in supplies to thousands left homeless.
CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's former army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi (AHB'-del fat-AH' el-SEE'-see) is officially the new president of Egypt. He was sworn in today as leader of a nation roiled since 2011 by deadly unrest and economic woes. The day has been declared a national holiday and there was tight security in Cairo.
