OREM, Utah (AP) — Orem police say a man suspected of driving impaired crashed into the vehicle of the agency's one officer whose sole job is to spot alcohol violations.

Orem police spokesman Lt. Craig Martinez says 24-year-old Eric Hidalgo had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol when he was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was booked into jail but has been released.

Martinez says Hidalgo fled the scene of an accident before driving the wrong way and hitting the officer's car. Police say Hidalgo had been driving his girlfriend's new car.

The officer is the city's lone alcohol enforcement officer on the 100-member police force.

Martinez said the officer wasn't hurt but his car was damaged.

A phone listing for Hidalgo, of American Fork, could not be found.
