PROVO, Utah (AP) — Provo fire officials say cottonwood seeds that lazily travel through the air helped fuel two small fires over the weekend.
Deputy Fire Chief Tom Augustus says the balls of white fluff are almost as volatile as gasoline.
One fire sparked by a discarded cigarette damaged a fence along the Provo River Trail.
Augustus tells the Daily Herald of Provo (http://bit.ly/RxoHU1 ) that firefighters found dozens of cottonwood seeds still burning at a second home where some stairs were damaged.
Augustus says the seeds can build up in window wells and become flash fires when sparks hit.
