WASHINGTON (AP) — It's hoped that backlogged Veterans Affairs facilities will get some relief from a policy change that would allow more veterans to get care at private hospitals. The VA facilities have struggled to cope with new patients from the wars on terrorism as well as old soldiers from prior conflicts. The change comes amid allegations about treatment delays and falsified records.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Intentional burns have markedly increased the size of a wildfire burning in rugged terrain in a northern Arizona canyon, but officials say it will ultimately deprive the blaze of fuel. The goals is to protect structures threatened in Oak Creek Canyon, keep the fire from pushing into nearby communities and minimize the potential for flooding. No homes have been destroyed. The fire is 5 percent contained.
GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — A troubled man who police say killed six people and himself in Southern California can be seen in YouTube videos blaming others for his plight. Elliot Rodger aired his contempt for everyone from his roommates to women to the whole human race. Thirteen people were injured in the rampage in Isla Vista, a half-square-mile town centered on university life.
BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand's coup leaders continue trying to fend off growing international condemnation and hundreds of protesters who died warnings against demonstrations. The United States is urging an immediate return to democracy and has cut off foreign aid as well as canceling military exercises with Thailand since the coup.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Today's presidential election in Ukraine is seen as critical to stability but pro-Russia insurgents in the east have managed to block much of the balloting in the region. There are no reports of clashes today after weeks of intense battles. But the regional administration in Donetsk says that only 426 out of 2,430 polling stations in the region are open and none in the city of Donetsk.
