SAN MARCOS, Calif. (AP) — Just when the worst seems to be over, fire officials in Southern California find themselves with another problem to contend with. A wildfire has flared up in the San Marcos area, prompting more than 13,000 new evacuation notices in addition to more than 20,000 orders issued Wednesday. It's one of nine fires burning in San Diego County.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — In Tampa, Fla., a 53-year-old former military linguist and longtime Army officer's wife has been convicted of first-degree murder. Jurors rejected the defense's argument that Julie Schenecker was legally insane when she shot and killed her 13-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter more than three years ago. She was sentenced soon after to two life terms to be served at the same time.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — An American Airlines jet with 183 passengers aboard returned to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after flames were seen in one of the Boeing 757's two engines. The incident began this afternoon shortly after American Flight 2287 took off from DFW for Tulsa, Oklahoma. There were no injuries.
LONGVIEW, Texas (AP) — Police in Longview, Texas, say a 34-year-old woman posed as a teenager to enroll as a sophomore at a small private high school. Longview police say Charity Johnson was arrested early Tuesday after telling officers her name was "Charite Stevens" and that she was born in November 1997. The principal at New Life Christian School says everyone at the school was convinced she was a teen.
SEATTLE (AP) — It turns out ailing radio host Casey Kasem was on vacation — not in danger — when authorities found him in Washington state this week. A Los Angeles judge had expressed concerns about the 82-year-old radio and TV personality's whereabouts amid a dispute between his wife and children from another marriage. But the sheriff's office in Kitsap County found him and his wife, Jean, at a home with longtime friends.
