SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Highway Patrol stopped more than 150 motorists caught violating the state's tough new ban on dialing or texting on their cellphone while driving.
The patrol let all but a half-dozen off with just warnings on Tuesday, the first day the new law went into effect.
Those six were cited for driving dangerously or erratically while handling their phones. They face fines of up to $100.
UHP Sgt. Todd Royce says troopers rode in the cabs of various trucking company big rigs, spotting offenders and radioing the information to cruisers for subsequent traffic stops.
He told the Salt Lake Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/q3ccm7g) it was a successful educational effort.
In all, 148 warning tickets were issued statewide.
