ORRICK, Mo. (AP) — Heavy storms are barreling through parts of the nation's midsection. There are severe thunderstorm warnings for the Missouri and Kansas region. At least one tornado is confirmed to have touched down in northwest Missouri this evening, damaging homes and power lines in the small Ray County town of Orrick. No injuries have been reported.

DOSWELL, Va. (AP) — A spokeswoman for the family of Natalie Lewis says the University of Richmond women's basketball team staff member was one of three people aboard a hot air balloon that crashed in Virginia last night. Lewis is still missing. But police officials are describing their search as an operation to recover remains. The bodies of the pilot and a second passenger were found.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say they've arrested a suspect in the pitchfork robbery of a Waffle House in Georgia and a killing in Tennessee. The Sheriff's Office in Knox County, Tennessee, says 49-year-old Jeffery Willard Wooten was arrested on Friday. He was charged in the fatal shooting of 44-year-old Randy Lands earlier that day in a Knox County home.

YOLA, Nigeria (AP) — More resources are being poured into the search for hundreds of schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Islamic militants in Nigeria. A team of French experts has now arrived in the African country. They will be working with British, American and Nigerian authorities in an increasingly international effort to locate the girls being held by the group, Boko Haram.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — A former secret service agent who was present during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and swearing in of Lyndon Johnson has died. Thomas "Lem" Johns was 88. His grandson says Johns died today in Alabama. Lem Johns is pictured in iconic photos from Nov. 22, 1963 aboard the presidential plane where Johnson was sworn in.
