CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — State police say an inmate from Indiana at the Charleston County jail helped a fellow inmate commit suicide by choking him.
The State Law Enforcement Division charged 30-year-old Michael Bixby of Hobart, Indiana, with assisted suicide.
A statement from a SLED agent says Bixby strangled inmate Matthew Glidden in the jail March 24. The statement and arrest warrant gave no indication of how agents knew Glidden wanted to die. SLED spokesman Thom Berry refused to release any additional details because the investigation is still open.
Assisted suicide is a felony in South Carolina and carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
It wasn't known if Bixby had a lawyer.
Both Bixby and Glidden were in jail awaiting trial on charges of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
