Major League Baseball is holding their annual draft. Ten players with with Utah connections have been selected in the first 18 rounds.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A University of Utah senior and two players who have signed to play with the Utes next season were selected on the first day of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft. Shortstop Ryan Khoury, who completed his collegiate career with the Utes last month, was selected by the Boston Red Sox. Khoury was the 373rd overall pick in the draft and was the 22nd player selected in the 12th round. Khoury was the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. His 4-38 batting average was the fifth-best mark in N-C-A-A Division One last week. Alta High School pitcher Josh Freeman and Salt Lake Community College pitcher Travis Barnett signed with Utah in November. Freeman was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eleventh round, with the 337th overall selection. Barnett went to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 14th round, with the 409th pick.
OREM, Utah (AP) -- Utah Valley State senior pitcher Kam Mickolio was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 18th round of s Major League Baseball 2006 First-Year Player Draft. He was the 531st pick overall. Mickolio was named to the Division-I All-Independent Second team after finishing the season with a 6-and-6 record and a 5-point-3 E-R-A. Mickolio was also drafted in 2003 by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 46th round after his freshman season while at Eastern Utah.
