GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Dick Cheney said during a visit to Grand Rapids that he's "enormously grateful" to the donor who supplied the heart used in a transplant procedure performed on the former vice president two years ago.
Cheney and cardiologist Jonathan Reiner took part in a talk Monday at the Spectrum Health Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center. Cheney and Reiner co-authored a book "Heart: An American Medical Odyssey."
According to The Grand Rapids Press and WJRW-AM, Cheney said he believed he was close to death in 2010. But then Cheney received a left ventricular assist device that kept him alive for the next 20 months until he received a heart transplant in March 2012.
Cheney was President Gerald Ford's chief of staff. Grand Rapids is Ford's hometown.
