MEBANE, N.C. (AP) — A former Randolph County teacher has been arrested on charges in connection with sexual contact with or illegal photography of students.

Sheriff's deputies say 54-year-old Hazem Moustafa Eldara of Asheboro turned himself in Wednesday.

Eldara had been charged in December with taking indecent liberties with a student and was released on bail.

Eldara was charged with 55 other counts in February that included taking indecent liberties with a student, using a photographic imaging device to view others and possession of a photographic image obtained in violation of secret peeping statute.

Deputies did not arrest Eldara after the February charges because they thought he had left the country. It's not clear if he has a lawyer.

Most of the victims are his current or former students.
