LIMA, Peru (AP) — Inmates have rocked a Peruvian prison with a Holy Week performance of the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar."
Minimum-security prisoners joined national prisons officials in the audience of Tuesday night's performance in the Sarita Colonia prison in Lima's port of Callao. The patio was protected by dozens of armed guards.
A 35-year-old convicted robber named Freddy Battifora directed the work, whose cast included foreigners. Battifora told reporters that acting in the rock opera was a healthier means of self-expression for blowing off steam.
The all-inmate cast of dozens had worked since February to learn lines, sew costumes and build the set.
