DETROIT (AP) — Police say a 19-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained in a gang shooting outside a Detroit high school.
Sgt. Michael Woody tells the Detroit Free Press that police learned Sunday that Darryl Smith died from the injuries he sustained Friday evening in the parking lot of East English Village Preparatory Academy. Woody says no one was in custody Monday.
According to Chief James Craig, Smith was caught in the line of fire when gang members shot into a crowd of students at the school's parking lot. No other injuries were reported.
Craig says that Smith had no known link to any gang.
Detroit Public Schools spokesman Steve Wasko says about 800 attended the Grammy Night event for seniors at the school, which has about 1,500 students.
