TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A bomb sniffing dog credited with saving a military unit in Afghanistan is retiring with full military honors.
Military officials say that in 2012, a Belgian Malinois named Eddie found two improvised explosive devices containing 10 pounds of homemade explosives. It saved the lives of his 13-member patrol unit, which was made up of U.S. allied forces.
The retirement ceremony was held Friday at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., and a few dozen soldiers turned out to cheer Eddie on.
Eddie is assigned to MacDill's 6th Security Forces Squadron and has served for about five years. In retirement, he will be reunited with his first handler, Andrew Grymes.
