MICRON FOUNDATION-GIFT
Micron Foundation donates $1 million to UI
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Micron Foundation has given $1 million to the University of Idaho to be used to pay for an endowed professorship in microelectronics.
Professor Fred Bartlow tells the Idaho Statesman in a story on Thursday that having another professor will allow the school to bring in more microelectronic graduate students.
There are about 50 now.
Naga Chandrasekaran is Micron's vice president for process research and development.
He says he considers the $1 million more of an investment rather than a gift. He says the money will help the school recruit the best minds.
COLD CASE ARREST
Prosecutor: Idaho man cut victim into pieces
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Prosecutors say a Nampa man charged with first-degree murder cut his victim into pieces and is also responsible for other killings.
Those details emerged at a hearing Thursday in 4th District Court where 45-year-old Michael S. Dauber pleaded not guilty.
Judge Patrick Owen ordered Dauber remain in the Ada County Jail without bond.
Dauber was taken into custody in Nampa in March in connection with the December 2007 killing of Steve Kalogerakos.
Boise County Prosecutor Ian Gee says Dauber dumped Kalogerakos' remains in a remote, mountainous area a few miles outside Idaho City.
Gee also told Owen that Dauber admitted to others that he killed Kalogerakos, and that he killed others as well. Gee didn't name other possible victims.
MISSING MOM
Judge suppresses statements made to police
MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho judge has ruled that potentially incriminating statements made to police by a man charged with killing his estranged wife can't be used at trial.
Second District Judge Michael J. Griffin on Wednesday granted the defense motion made by attorneys for 52-year-old Charles A. Capone.
But he also denied a defense motion to have the trial moved out of Latah County.
Rachael Anderson, a 40-year-old mother of four from Clarkston, Wash., was in the process of getting a divorce when she disappeared on April 16, 2010.
Authorities say she was lured to a Moscow, Idaho, auto repair shop owned by Capone where she was drugged and killed. Her body hasn't been found.
Capone's first-degree murder trial is scheduled to start June 23.
CANDIDATE DOMESTIC BATTERY
Idaho candidate arrested in 2009 domestic dispute
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Republican contender in the race for a western Idaho legislative district has had run-ins with the law.
The Idaho Press-Tribune reports Greg Chaney was charged with domestic battery in the presence of a child in 2009.
Prosecutors said in court documents that Chaney pushed his then-wife, snatched her cell phone when she tried to call police and threatened to kill himself with a steak knife. The charge was later amended to disturbing the peace; Chaney was convicted of that charge and of misdemeanor malicious destruction of property.
The representative hopeful acknowledged the incident, but said he has changed his ways.
Chaney is running unopposed in the primary for the seat being vacated by Caldwell Republican Rep. Darrell Bolz. He will face Democrat Leif Skyving in the general election.
CROWDED JAIL
SW Idaho sheriff says jail addition a Band-Aid
CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) — Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue says a plan to expand the existing jail is a bad idea because it won't solve some basic problems and would create more.
Donahue told Canyon County commissioners at a meeting on Wednesday that the proposed addition is like putting a Band-Aid on a flowing artery.
The Idaho Press-Tribune reports that the proposed addition could house 80 more inmates.
The jail has faced lawsuits from the American Civil Liberties Union about overcrowding.
But voters in the southwestern Idaho county have repeatedly rejected paying to build a new facility.
Donahue says the core problem is the original building that needs to be replaced.
He says building an addition won't eliminate many of the ACLU's concerns or the high cost of operating the jail.
CHALLIS-EARTHQUAKE
Earthquake rattles Custer County in central Idaho
CHALLIS, Idaho (AP) — No damage or injuries have been reported following a 4.1-magnitude earthquake Thursday morning near the central Idaho town of Challis.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor about seven miles northwest of the town occurred at 6:21 a.m.
A Custer County dispatcher says no damage has been reported, but residents in the sparsely populated area have been calling to find out what happened.
WOMEN'S PRISON-NOROVIRUS
Women's prison cancels visits due to virus
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An apparent outbreak of norovirus has caused officials to cancel visits this weekend at the South Boise Women's Correctional Center.
It's the second week in a row visits have been canceled at the facility for minimum security female offenders.
Officials tell the Idaho Statesman that the spread of the disease has been slowed, and canceling visits this weekend will limit additional exposure.
Officials say staff and inmates have been using bleach to disinfect the facility, and sports drinks are being given to sick inmates to keep them hydrated.
IDAHO ATM LARCENY
Idaho men charged with larceny, shooting at cops
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Two northern Idaho men have been charged in connection with a string of ATM break-ins and a shootout with police.
Nathan Paul Davenport and Matthew Taber Annable were indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury.
They are accused of stealing cash from ATMs in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Idaho.
After a breaking into an ATM in McCall, Idaho in January, the pair shot at pursuing police officers with a semi-automatic rifle, according to the indictment.
Davenport and Annable were arrested a few days later in Utah.
They face charges of bank larceny, conspiracy and use of a deadly weapon during a felony offense.
