CARSON CITY, Nev. —Nevada Republicans gathering for their party convention are seeking to show unity to boost voter registration, raise money and elect more GOP candidates, goals that have proved elusive in recent years for a state party that has become known for its volatility. The attempt at cohesion amid polarization between staunch conservatives and establishment Republicans — a split that also divides the party nationally — comes in the spotlight of a midterm election season and an attempt to host the national convention in two years when the party nominates its next presidential candidate. RANGE SHOWDOWN

LAS VEGAS — Tensions have escalated between protesters and federal police who used a stun gun on a son of a Nevada rancher fighting a roundup of cattle that he claims have historical grazing rights northeast of Las Vegas. No serious injuries were reported and no arrests were made, but family members told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that rancher Cliven Bundy's 57-year-old sister also was knocked to the ground during a Wednesday confrontation involving dozens of protesters and several U.S. Bureau of Land Management rangers. — AZ-XGR-RANGE SHOWDOWN-ARIZONA — A group of Republican Arizona lawmakers are upset with a brewing showdown in Nevada between the federal government and a rancher who claims rights to graze his cattle in a remote area about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

CARSON CITY — Former Nevada Assembly Speaker Joe Dini, a gentle-voiced statesman who used power of persuasion and friendship to bridge partisan divides through a long legislative career, died Thursday. NORTH LAS VEGAS-BUDGET

LAS VEGAS — North Las Vegas officials say they've reached agreements with two labor unions and are working to settle with others as they try to stave off a possible takeover by the state. Mayor John Lee announced the deal Wednesday evening, after a day of talks that involved Gov. Brian Sandoval. SENT: 450 words.

UNLV SANCTIONS

LAS VEGAS — The UNLV Rebels will not be eligible for the Mountain West championship game or a bowl berth in 2014 after failing to reach the minimum Academic Progress Rate score. The university said Thursday that its final appeal to the NCAA subcommittee was denied and sanctions will be enforced. The sanctions include no postseason competition, replacing four hours of practice time with four hours of academics weekly and having five days of football-related activities a week instead of six. LOS ANGELES — Timothy Bradley believes former pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao has lost his competitive fire heading into their welterweight rematch. — HILLARY CLINTON-VEGAS — Hillary Rodham Clinton is continuing a speaking tour with a stop in Nevada for a keynote appearance at a trade conference at a Las Vegas Strip resort.

— OFFICERS-BOOK DRIVE — Rounding up bad guys isn't the only priority of Reno police officers.

— CASINO UNION PICKETING-VEGAS — Union members plan to picket in downtown Las Vegas this weekend to draw attention to ongoing contract talks.

— INMATE'S APPEAL SPURNED — Saying that finality is long overdue, a federal appeals court is spurning the latest appeal on behalf of an Arizona death row inmate convicted of the 1986 killing of a Nevada man.
