CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A spokesman for North Carolina's largest city says Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon has resigned just hours after he was charged with federal public corruption and bribery. Cannon, who's been mayor for only six months, is accused of accepting more than $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen who wanted to do work with city.

DARRINGTON, Wash. (AP) — Family members of those missing in a Washington state mudslide are beginning to confront a grim reality: Their loved ones might never be found, remaining entombed forever inside a mountain of mud that's believed to have claimed more than 20 lives in Snohomish County. Crews are still looking for more victims nearly five days after the slide.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Despite deteriorating weather in the turbulent southern Indian Ocean, a search has resumed for any sign of a Malaysian jetliner that disappeared March 8. Eleven planes and five ships are scouring a search area 1,550 miles southwest of the Australian west coast city of Perth. They're trying to find 122 objects spotted by a French satellite several days ago.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The U.S. plans to join with other NATO nations in increasing ground and naval forces in Eastern Europe as part of the military alliance's response to Russia's incursion in Ukraine. President Barack Obama's deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes, says NATO is aiming to provide "a continuous presence to reassure our allies."

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats are using a little-used legislative tool to force a vote on a comprehensive immigration bill. It's called a discharge petition and requires the signature of 218 for legislative action. But it's doomed to fail because it would need the backing of dozens of Republicans. Democrats hope, however, the effort will increase election-year pressure on Republicans to act.
