BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Ada County coroner in southwest Idaho is retiring after 36 years on the job, saying it takes a toll dealing with death all the time.
Erwin Sonnenberg made the announcement Friday.
He was appointed chief deputy coroner in 1979 and was elected coroner in 1984.
Sonnenberg tells the Idaho Statesman (http://bit.ly/1e4UQup) that now is also the right time to retire because the ideal candidate to replace him is forensic lab supervisor Robert Karinen.
Sonnenberg says no one in the state can match Karinen in terms of experience and knowledge.
Karinen has filed to run in the May Republican primary.
Matthew Townsend is his only challenger in the primary.
