NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have been moderately higher and lower so far today. Investors are monitoring the crisis in Ukraine and the possibility that the West will impose sanctions on Russia next week. Residents of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea are scheduled to vote Sunday on whether to break away and join Russia.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A government official in Malaysia says investigators are becoming more certain that a missing jetliner turned back across the country after losing communications, and that someone with aviation skills was responsible for the change in course. NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man who fatally shot a knife-wielding prowler in a ski mask and then learned it was his 15-year-old son will not face prosecution. A person briefed on the decision says prosecutors do not plan to file charges against Jeffrey Giuliano (joo-lee-AH'-no). State police have said he went outside with a gun around 1 a.m. on Sept. 27, 2012, when his sister called to say someone was trying to break into her house next door to his. Authorities say Giuliano saw a masked person holding a knife come toward him in a threatening manner and shot him. He later was told the person was his son Tyler.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police have arrested a 20-year-old Los Angeles man who allegedly threatened to shoot a random pedestrian if his Twitter post was retweeted a hundred times. The Los Angeles Times reports Dakkari McAnuff was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. The investigation began Wednesday morning when police officers were notified about a photo on Twitter showing a rifle pointed at a Los Angeles street. Investigators say they were able to link the man to the Twitter account and track it to a home in the downtown area, where he was arrested. Police later determined the weapon was an air rifle, which was recovered from the home.
