LAS VEGAS (AP) — A late-night fire in west Las Vegas has killed one resident, injured another and left nearly a dozen police officers with minor smoke inhalation. Fire officials say police weren't able to immediately reach a woman screaming for help inside a burning house late last night because the door and all the windows had bars on them. Officers used bolt cutters to reach the woman and pulled her to safety. A man was found dead in another room.

ELKO, Nev. (AP) — The Elko City Council is putting off a decision on whether to establish rules governing medical marijuana dispensaries. Police Chief Ben Reed, Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts and Assemblyman John Ellison were among those urging the council to amend city zoning law so as to outlaw medical marijuana outlets. But a council member instead directed staff to bring back information on the potential impact of a yearlong moratorium on medical pot sales to allow more study.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A defense attorney says a woman accused of drowning her 3-year-old son in a bathtub will probably plead not guilty by reason of insanity to a murder charge. Public defender Andrea Luem says she plans to seek a psychiatric evaluation for 30-year-old Christine Tracy Allen before a June 17 preliminary hearing.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — With spring in the air, Nevada black bears will soon be emerging from hibernation. And they will be hungry. Biologists say the bears will eat emergent grasses and forbs, as well as dead and decaying animals. But they'll also key in on easy pickings from trash. Biologists are warning residents to secure their garbage.
