CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Senate has passed a resolution to honor the director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department for his work with the public after the Jan. 9 chemical spill that contaminated drinking water for more than 300,000 people.
Sen. John Unger said many people breathed easier during the crisis because of Dr. Rahul Gupta.
Sen. Evan Jenkins noted that public health officers are often overlooked and unsung heroes who struggle for funding.
The resolution states Gupta has worked with various health care organizations to develop, integrate, and measure adherence to various public health initiatives, including those for the underserved and indigent population. They include efforts to reduce heart disease, stroke and pneumonia-related morbidity and mortality.
