PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Health officials say the number of students in South Dakota who were obese or overweight during the 2012-2013 school year remained practically unchanged compared to the previous year.

The South Dakota Department of Health says 16.6 percent of students attending schools that submitted data to the department were considered overweight. The percentage was the same during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The agency says 16 percent of students were considered obese last school year, nearly unchanged from 15.9 percent the year before.

Nearly 36 percent of all South Dakota schools submitted students' height and weight information for the report.

Officials say estimates show that about 17 percent of children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 19 in the U.S. are obese.
