TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — State agencies across Florida are working together to decrease the number of suicides.
According to state officials, more than 2,900 suicides were recorded in Florida in 2012. Suicide was the eighth largest cause of death among Floridians. Florida has two times more suicides than homicides each year.
The Florida Department of Children and Families is partnering with the Florida Suicide Prevention Coalition to recognize the 12th Annual Suicide Prevention Day at the Capitol on Thursday.
DCF officials said children and adults who are informed of the warning signs of depression and suicidal ideation are more likely to detect, report and prevent suicide.
A memorial to honor those lost to suicide was held Wednesday night at the Woman's Club of Tallahassee.
