HUNTINGTON WOODS, Mich. (AP) — A former physics professor who picked up fiddling after setting it aside for 45 years has won a composing contest by Fiddler magazine.
The Macomb Daily reports ( http://bit.ly/1hbDkUy ) that 73-year-old Talbert Stein of Huntington Woods returned to the instrument after he retired 10 years ago from Wayne State University. His composition was judged first by a panel of fiddle players out of 110 entries.
He named the tune "Muddy Clam" after a clam hunting trip to New Jersey. He won $100 and three volumes of DVDs from the Fiddle Masters Concert Series. His winning score will be published this spring in the 20th anniversary issue of Fiddler magazine.
Stein plays in a duo called Stringtime with guitarist Tom Allen.
