SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert says he's pleased that lawmakers are moving forward with plans to possibly relocate the state prison in Draper.
But Herbert told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the debate should include broader talks about the corrections system.
The Republican governor says the state needs to ensure the system is designed so prisoners can successfully return to society.
A resolution to support moving the 700-acre facility is pending in the Legislature.
The prison sits in an area south of Salt Lake City where several high-tech firms have set up shop in recent years.
Proponents of relocation say the land could be freed for real estate development while avoiding years of repairs and upgrades on the existing structure.
An outside consulting firm estimates Utah would gain about $100 million by moving the prison.
