HONG KONG, May 30, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Las Vegas gambling mogul Steve Wynn Tuesday bought a vase from China's Ming dynasty for a record $10.1 million in a Hong Kong auction.

The pear-shaped vase adorned with a peony scroll was the first of its kind to be auctioned in more than 15 years, the Hong Kong office of Christie's International said in a statement. It was described as near perfect without any visible damage.

A Scottish couple had inherited the artifact and unaware of its value, used it as a lamp, China Daily reported.

Wynn, the chief executive of Wynn Resorts Ltd., is preparing to open a casino resort near Hong Kong in September.
