Can the New York Post pull off a Southern accent?

The Post, a feisty tabloid that is best known for its cheeky headlines and celebrity gossip, is considering a plan to sell a print version of the paper in Atlanta.

"We are in negotiations in Atlanta to have the New York Post available for home delivery and on the newsstands," spokeswoman Suzanne Halpin confirmed Friday. She said such a deal would likely involve "a relatively modest number of papers."

Halpin declined to comment about whether the paper wants to expand in other big U.S. cities.

Introducing a print edition in new markets might seem an odd move in today's media world, in which print circulation has been sliding. However, The New York Times --- which aims for a far different audience from the Post --- has used expanded nationwide availability to stave off the kinds of circulation losses that have plagued most papers.

The Post already is available in print well beyond New York City, including several states in the Northeast and in parts of Florida, California and Nevada.

As of March, the Post's weekday circulation was 673,379, making it the nation's seventh-largest paper.
