LOGAN — With Jarred Shaw, Utah State was left rudderless in its Mountain West opener against Air Force.

The Aggies lacked his scoring, missed his rebounding and sorely needed his toughness against a Falcons team that beat Utah State 73-71 on Wednesday. Luckily, Christmas came nine days late for Utah State, as Shaw has been fully reinstated by coach Stew Morrill, and eligible to play immediately in the Aggies’ conference home opener against San Jose State tomorrow night.

Morrill suspended Shaw on Dec. 16 for a violation of team rules, and he served a five-game suspension. The Aggies were 4-1 during the suspension, but lost to Air Force in Utah State’s first-ever Mountain West Conference game.

In a press release from the university, Morrill said the issue is closed in the mind of Utah State and its athletics program.

"There has been lots of speculation and untrue rumors regarding Jarred,” he said. “Jarred Shaw is a student-athlete who graduates this spring and who made a mistake. This was his first offense and he has served his penalty by missing five games. We will go forward from here, and our team is certainly excited to have Jarred back.”

In the same release, Utah State athletics director Scott Barnes said Shaw was only allowed to come back after his case worked through university protocol.

"The University followed the same process as it would with any USU student to determine the outcome," Barnes said.

Prior to being suspended, Shaw averaged 16.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game for Utah State.
