This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Right now many families are making it a holiday tradition to come to Hatch Family Chocolates, located at 376 Eighth Avenue in Salt Lake City, to enjoy their famous rich hot chocolate. Owners Steve Hatch and his wife Katie Masterson are busy creating chocolates for happy customers to enjoy throughout the season. Their vision is for people to come in, relax, have some wonderful chocolates and unwind from the day.
Steve comes from a long family history of chocolate making. His grandmother, Hazel Hatch, learned to make chocolates in the early 1900s and practiced hand dipping with little blocks of wood. She would splatter chocolate on her apron to take home for her kids to eat. Later, her son Jerry followed her into the business and learned how to make chocolate from his mom.
Jerry would sell his chocolates on the side, and things expanded from there. Steve and Katie enjoy Jerry's occasional visits at Hatch Family Chocolates. Now in his 80s, he still likes to lend his support.
Hatch Family Chocolates is still enjoying local, national and international success, following their exposure on a TLC cable show. To accommodate their growing business, a few years ago Hatch Family Chocolates purchased the former Eighth Avenue Grocery store and expanded their operation. The new location is at 376 8th Avenue, right across the street from LDS Hospital. It's not unusual to see hospital staff come in during breaks or visitors stopping by to grab a treat for a loved one on their way to the hospital.
This is what a major change the move was: Hatch Family Chocolates expanded from a 400 square foot kitchen to 5,000 square feet. What has made all the difference is how much demand there is for the product. Steve and Katie have also expanded into another Utah favorite, homemade ice cream.
The state of Utah has a great chocolate history. We like our candy, especially quality chocolate. Hatch Family Chocolates has become a local favorite, and you'll understand why as soon as you taste their delicious hand-dipped chocolates.
