TRENTON, N.Y. (AP) - The grandmother of U.S. Olympic Luge team member Erin Hamlin has been killed in a car crash in upstate New York.
The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says 75-year-old Joan Hamlin of Remsen, N.Y., was a passenger in a car that went out of control Monday morning on a slush-covered road in the town of Trenton.
Deputies say the car crashed head-on with an oncoming vehicle.
Joan Hamlin was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesman for the US Luge Team confirms Tuesday that she was Erin Hamlin's grandmother.
Officials say the driver of the car is being treated at a Syracuse hospital for multiple injuries. The other driver suffered minor injuries.
Erin Hamlin, also of Remsen, qualified for the 2014 Sochi Olympics last weekend during a World Cup competition in Whistler, British Columbia.
