GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - In a story Nov. 28, The Associated Press, relying on information from family members, reported erroneously that Jack Gardo was the last surviving member of the PT-157 crew that rescued John F. Kennedy from an island in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Military records show that Gardo was not a part of the crew that rescued Kennedy and other sailors in August 1943. Gardo did not arrive for duty in Squadron 9, which included PT-157, until December 1943.

Man who served in famed patrol boat squadron during WWII dies at SC home
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ A man who served in a patrol boat squadron in the Pacific Ocean during World War II has died.
Guy Gardo says Jack Gardo died in his sleep at his Greenville home Nov. 27. He was 87.
Records show Jack Gardo began serving in Squadron 9 in December 1943. The squadron included PT-157. PT-157 was sent in August 1943 to rescue future President John F. Kennedy and his crew after their boat was rammed by a Japanese destroyer in the middle of the night.
Kennedy famously led the survivors to nearby islands until they could be rescued.
Guy Gardo says his father joined the U.S. Navy at age 16. Jack Gardo had forged his father's signature.
