Every now and then, a week designated for the purpose of calling attention to a particular issue or concern comes along that is actually timely and meaningful.

So it is with the week just ended - America Saves Week.

It is a week set aside by a broad coalition of nonprofit, corporate, and government groups with the intention of helping individuals and families learn to save and build wealth.

Is it timely? You bet! Just take a look at what has been happening with the nation's economy. The housing downturn! The credit crunch! Perhaps a recession! After years of free-wheeling, unbridled spending by far too many people, the proverbial piper needs to be paid.

Is this campaign meaningful? It can be if people actually listen to the message, get control of their spending habits and start paying down debt, while actually putting money away in a realistic quest for financial freedom.

Organizers of America Saves Week say their campaign is all about getting people to make "a commitment toward building a wealthier future by making your money work harder for you."

KSL endorses the concept. Saving should be as automatic as spending, and this is as good a time as any to make that kind of personal commitment.
