ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Favorite Groupie Doll got a second wind in the stretch to hold off Judy The Beauty by a half-length and win the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint for the second straight year.
Ridden by Rajiv Maragh, Groupie Doll took the lead on the turn and appeared to be giving way to a charging Judy The Beauty but found new fuel in mid-stretch, covering seven furlongs in 1:20.75 and becoming the thirteenth horse to win multiple Cup races.
The 5-year-old mare is being sold, making it likely her last race for trainer and part-owner William Bradley
Groupie Doll paid $8, $4.60 and $3.40. Judy The Beauty, ridden by replacement Luis Saez after John Velasquez was thrown from his mount and hospitalized earlier Saturday, paid $9.20 and $5.40.
