SALT LAKE CITY — Star Lotulelei is rapidly becoming a real star in the National Football League.
The rookie defensive lineman picked up six tackles in a 30-15 win over the St. Louis Rams, and owned the line of scrimmage. Former Ute Steve Smith also had his biggest performance of the season for Carolina, catching five passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Other Utah defensive alumni also had solid showings, with San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle earning five tackles in a win over Jacksonville Jaguars. In Miami, Paul Soliai had three tackles for the Dolphins, Derrick Shelby had four tackles, and Koa Misi had two tackles. The Dolphins lost to the Buffalo Bills, 23-21.
Paul Kruger had three tackles and a sack in a Cleveland Browns loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Former Utes Alex Smith and Sean Smith faced off against fellow Utah alum Brice McCain in a showdown between the Houtson Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs. Alex Smith completed 23 passes for 240 yards but also threw an interception, while Sean Smith made a tackle. McCain had two tackles for the Texans, but Kansas City held on late to beat Houston, 17-16.
BYU’s lone highlight came from Austin Collie’s only catch for ten yards in a 30-27 the New England Patriots' loss to the New York Jets.
Utah State alumnus Robert Turbin gained 15 yards on three carries for the Seattle Seahawks, as Seattle climbed past the Arizona Cardinals, 34-22.
Weber State’s Paul McQuistan also started for the Seahawks.
Cottonwood’s Stanley Havili scored a touchdown for the Indianapolis, as the Colts handed Hillcrest and Utah alum Zane Beadles’ Denver Broncos their first loss, 39-33. Also, Timpview’s Stephen Paea had two tackles for the Chicago Bears. Highland’s Haloti Ngata made four tackles in a 19-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
