CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Gary Player's lawyer says the nine-time major winner has settled a dispute with a former friend over a $1 million transaction that took place in 1999.

Lawyer Rael Gootkin says Player and businessman Dave King have come to an out-of-court agreement. King once caddied for Player at the Masters. He threatened to sue the golfing great for $3.3 million and claim some of his South African assets for not paying back what he said was a loan. Player argued it was not a loan but does not deny that the transaction took place.

Gootkin told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the agreement should prevent the matter from going to court "on the assumption that all the conditions are met."

Gootkin says the settlement details are confidential.
