ZANZIBAR, Tanzania (AP) - Tanzanian police say a Catholic priest was attacked by acid at a busy business area on the island of Zanzibar.

Regional Police Commander Mkadam Khamis Mkadam confirmed Friday the priest, Rev. Joseph Anselmo Mwagambwa, was attacked by acid which badly injured his face, chest, thighs and legs. The priest is being treated at the main Mnazi Mmoja hospital.

The policeman said the attack occurred in a crowed part of Stone Town at about 4 p.m. Police are asking for witnesses to the attack.

This is the fifth acid attack on Zanzibar since November. Last month two young British women doing volunteer work were injured when an assailant threw acid in their faces.

Police have not yet made any arrests for the attacks.
