SALT LAKE CITY — While pro and college football seasons are underway, they are not the only levels of football being played. Today's column takes a look at four stories involving young players — from good to terrible.
The first is an amazing play in Indiana that might already be the catch of the year. The young tight end's name is Nick Bokun from Hobart. The senior exhibited his amazing hands against Laporte.
Bokun was running a route up the seam with the defender closely trailing him. The quarterback threw a back-shoulder pass forcing Bokun to make an adjustment. The defender failed to respond. He didn't get his hands up, didn't turn around and ran into Bokun.
The refs threw a flag, but Bokun wanted the catch and somehow he made it. It almost seemed like a hug as he wrapped both arms around the defender and snared the ball.
Bokun pulled the ball and defender to the ground and held on. It was an amazing catch.
Going beastmode
This video comes from Alabama where pee-wee football is a spectacle. This game in Goshen, Ala., features a runner named John David Taylor, according to Busted Coverage, and he shows off for the crowd.
Taylor looks to be 10-years-old and not even big for his age, but he packs a punch. He called his own number in a read-option and turned on beastmode. This run is along the lines of Marshawn Lynch's run against the New Orléans Saints in the playoffs a few years back — albeit on a smaller scale.
Taylor used a punching stiff arm that flattened the first would-be tackler and then turned on the jets to get around the corner. He simply sidestepped the next tackler then used one more stiff arm to get into the endzone.
This play is pretty amazing and shows the fun of watching pee-wee football. Remember how nice this is during the next story.
Trash-talking little kid
This video involves a 7-year-old New York Jets fan who decides to make one opposing fan miserable. The Jets were playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday and while this was Week One, this kid was in playoff form.
“I'm going to score in your face,” the kid said. “In your face. In your face. In your face.”
Following a nice play by the Jets the kid turned around and heckled a little more. At this point the Bucs are ahead, which the Bucs fan duly noted. The kid respondsed with this smart-mouth statement:
“Shut your mouth! Pay attention!”
Looks like the next-age of NFL fan will still be very annoying and Jets fans will still be very delusional, although the Jets did win in the end.
Now that the ugly side of sports has reared its head, this next story takes it to the next level.
Football player might face criminal charges
Joe Cominsky is a senior in Hamburg, Pa., and he could face charges after what he did in a high school game over the weekend.
Hamburg was playing Annville-Cleona when one of the ugliest incidents football will see occurred. There was a scuffle and Cominsky started up with Josh Hartman on the other team.
The two teams started fighting and in the middle of the mêlée, Cominsky grabbed Hartman's helmet and hit him with it twice.
Hartman appeared unharmed as he walked off the field, but this was still an ugly look at sports. Hartman's teammate, Taylor Prentice, was ejected after he joined the fray and threw punches.
Police are now looking at charges against Cominsky for his actions.
