NEW YORK (AP) - Former champion Lleyton Hewitt made the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time since 2006 with a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-1 victory over Evgeny Donskoy on Sunday.
The 32-year-old Hewitt, a former No. 1 who won the tournament in 2001, is a win away from making his first Grand Slam quarterfinal since Wimbledon in 2009.
Hewitt, who had fusion surgery on his left toe last year, has shot up from 233rd to 66th since his latest comeback.
His victory over Donskoy, ranked 102nd, came two days after Hewitt beat 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro in a five-setter than lasted more than four hours.
The Aussie attacked then net more than usual against his Russian opponent, and won 24 of the 31 points he played from up front.
