A pair of dogs who died in a Winona, Minnesota house fire are being credited for getting their owners out safely.

Bella, a three-year-old golden retriever mix, and Maddie, a six-month-old golden retriever, woke up Sue Feuling early Friday when the fire started.

When Feuling woke up with Bella on her bed barking, she knew something was wrong.

She then smelled smoke and rushed outside with her nine-year-old daughter McKenzie.

Feuling couldn't coax the dogs out of the house.

She thinks they thought McKenzie was still inside, and wouldn't leave without her.

Winona fire officials are calling the dogs "heroes."
