When I worked at a local garden center, customers would often describe their ideal plant. They usually wanted something that would bloom the entire season, didn't create a mess, required little maintenance and was pest and disease free. Unfortunately, I had to tell them that almost no such plant existed.

There are a few, though, that come close. One is actually a Utah native perennial that is gaining in popularity with the general public. It is often referred to as a Fire Chalice. Fire Chalice blooms profusely from July until frost, with orange to red trumpet shaped flowers, depending on the variety. It also attracts many native pollinators. It is a relatively low growing plant and may spread up to two to three feet a few years after being planted. It additionally grows densely enough that few weeds will grow up through it. However, it does not get out of control in flower beds as long as proper spacing is provided.

Fire Chalice requires deep watering every three to four weeks once established. In fact, over-watering will cause it to look ratty or may kill it. It also prefers relatively well drained soil. If planted in clay, planting it on a slight mound and incorporating compost around and under the roots will improve drainage and survivability.

Two varieties of Fire Chalice are currently available. They include Mountain Flame and Orange Carpet. Mountain Flame reaches between 12-18 inches tall and has orange red to red flowers. Orange Carpet stays below a foot tall and has orange flowers.

Utah State University is in the process of releasing other varieties with varying flower colors and growth habits.
