This is Marty Carpenter of the Salt Lake Chamber with your Utah Business Report.
Giving back to the community is important, and it's inspiring to see businesses step up to the plate.
Smith's Food and Drug has donated to Primary Children's Medical Center Foundation for each of the past 21 years. Now, the grocer has pledged a donation of one million dollars to the hospital.
Smith's is Primary Children's largest corporate contributor, having donated a total of 8-point-6 million since 2002.
Customers of Smith's joined in fundraising activities with store associates, including quilt auctions, parking lot carnivals, yard sales and motorcycle rally. This total also includes change collected from coin boxes at checkout stands, which accounts for approximately 125-thousand dollars.
The funds are used to further Primary Children's mission of providing medical care for children without regard to race, religion, or the ability to pay. In 2012, the hospital expended 13 million to cover more than 12 thousand visits by needed children.
