LASHKARGAH, Afghanistan, May 10, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A women's rights activist in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand escaped unharmed when unidentified gunmen attacked her vehicle, killing her driver.
Armed men sprayed bullets at the car carrying Fauzia Alomi Tuesday morning, killing her driver on the spot, a senior local official said. The incident happened near Lashkargah, the capital of the province, the Xinhua news agency reported.
Officials said it was the first time a women's rights activist had been targeted in the region. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, and no arrests have been made.
When the Taliban controlled Afghanistan, from 1996 to 2001, women's activities were banned.
In southern Afghanistan the Taliban have intensified their attacks since the beginning of the year, killing more than 300 people, including 24 U.S. soldiers.
