SALT LAKE CITY — Matt Shoemaker tossed eight strong innings and Luke Carlin broke open a close game with a grand slam, as the Salt Lake Bees cruised to a 9-1 over the Fresno Grizzlies on Saturday night. Shoemaker (5-8) allowed just one run on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks, while inducing three ground ball double plays. Jeremy Berg closed out the game with a three up, three down ninth inning. The Bees took a 2-0 lead in the first on a RBI triple by Luis Jimenez and a sacrifice fly by Efren Navarro. After Fresno scored in the second to make it 2-1, Salt Lake loaded the bases in the third inning on a single by Efren Navarro and walks to Tommy Field and Matt Long. Carlin followed by drilling a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence for the Bees' fifth grand slam of the season.

"I was just looking for a good pitch to hit, it really doesn't get any more complicated than that," said Carlin. "He (Fabio Castillo) left one up, and I was able to get the barrel to it."

Romine and Navarro each had two hits and two runs batted in to lead the Bees, while Jimenez added two hits and one RBI. Roberto Lopez chipped in with two hits, as Salt Lake has now won two out of three from Fresno and five out of seven on the homestand.

"It was good to put together a complete game," said Bees manager Keith Johnson. "We pitched the ball very well, played some solid defense, and nearly turned a triple play, which would have been cool."
