BYU freshman outfielder Jacob Hannemann was drafted by the Chicago Cubs on Friday in the Major League Baseball Draft. Hannemann was taken with the second pick in the third round (75th overall).
Hannemann finished his freshman season with the Cougars hitting .344 with 5 home runs and 29 RBI. The former Lone Peak Knight was named the 2013 WCC Freshman of the Year and earned 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American honors in his first season back after returning from his LDS Mission to Little Rock, AR.
Hannemann received interest from almost every team in the majors. Jacob told Cougar Sports Saturday a few weeks ago that 29 of the 30 MLB teams had contacted him prior to the draft.
Hannemann, who is on a football scholarship, is a defensive back on the BYU football team. Despite not participating in spring football, Hannemann was listed on the depth chart as the backup to Mike Hague at boundary corner. All signs however, seem to point to Hannemann foregoing his football career to focus solely on baseball.
