Vernal - They do it all themselves, with family recipes and a hands-on attitude.

Lynne Johnston's mother, Betty, opened her café in 1996 in a former Arctic Circle building. They are a family-run restaurant and also pride themselves on their family recipes all made from scratch.

"We make all of our pies, sweet rolls, soups, and chilis," says Johnston. "We smoke our own barbeque meat, brisket, and pork ribs."

Abby Mendes found herself working at her grandma's café at a young age and, in the small town of Vernal, she knows the locals orders the second they walk in.

"I know what they want to drink," Mendes says. "I already have their order turned in and I tell them if they want something new then that's too bad because I've already got their order turned in."

And if you aren't a part of the Betty's café family, you can work your way in like one customer did.

"He got tired of waiting on us to get here in the morning so we said 'Here is your key. You get everything ready for us and we'll be here about 6 o'clock."

It's not only their home grown attitude that keeps them in business but also their home cookin'.

Johnston says its just they way they do it.

"Because it's the best. Its the best way to do it and its how we were taught, you know? And that is just what we do."
