You've heard it said a thousand times, "worrying about the past will not change a thing".
So why do some of us continue to do so; and is there a way to get past this way of thinking?
Professional Counselor Sheldon Martin stopped by Mormon Times to explain how principles of the gospel can help us overcome distorted thought patterns that hold us hostage.
Q: How can we use Principles of the Gospel to change negative thought processes?
A: True doctrine understood changes attitudes and behavior and sometimes we do not take the time to identify distorted thoughts, and replace them with correct thoughts. For example, Alma the younger was "racked with torment" and allow his mind to catch hold of the Atonement and his feelings started to change. We need to identify correct principles and process them often.
Q: So what are some common distorted thought processes that people struggle with?
A: Worrying about the past will not change it. Focus on the direction we are headed. For example, if a family worries excessively about debt, it is helpful to know if the individuals are heading further into or out of debt.
Q: Sometimes we get caught up in the idea that righteousness is achieved by following a series of checklists. How is is this way of thinking destructive?
A: Righteousness does not come by a series of checklist, but in becoming more like the Lord. For example, if we check scripture study off the list, but do not let the study make us better, than the focus is placed on the activity and not the outcome. If we study charity but do not become charitable than the checklist will become overwhelming.
