How long is it going to take for victims of a 20,000 gallon gasoline leak in Gunnison to get satisfactory answers to their questions, along with the help they need to put their lives back together, from those responsible for the leak?
The leak occurred last summer and here it is January, and several families remain displaced from their homes, while half-a-dozen businesses affected by the leak remain closed.
All along there have been concerns about poor communication and the slow pace of response to the crisis. Imagine if this had happened in downtown Salt Lake City rather than on Main Street in Gunnison!
The victims deserve answers, not just from government officials and contractors hired to clean up the mess, but especially from Wind River Petroleum, the owner of the Top Stop convenience store where the gas leak originated. It is especially disappointing that no one from Wind River Petroleum showed up at a recent public meeting to respond to questions, or offer a voice of hope that individual help is part of the clean-up plan.
In KSL's view, it is time for Wind River Petroleum to step up, and assume more visible responsibility for a community crisis that, by all accounts, originated with them.
